Your friends have all taken years off their faces, but you don’t want to go through the invasive procedures they did. Enter polydioxanone (PDO) thread lifts. Check out how this non-surgical approach gets you the same results without the drawbacks.

Let’s face it: Your face is your greatest aesthetic asset. So, when the signs of aging start to appear, you don’t want to wait too long to take action.

Despite what you might think, restoring your youthful glow doesn’t necessarily require invasive surgical procedures.

These days, and thanks to aesthetic providers like Ben Shatil, DO, Allison Santhouse, PA-C, and our team of experts at YS Aesthetics, you have tons of options that turn back the hands of time.

One of our most popular non-surgical procedures is the PDO thread lift, which gives you face-lift results without the price tag or the laundry list of risks.

Here’s a closer look.

Meet the PDO thread lift

Traditional face-lifts cut, pull, and otherwise force your skin into submission, but PDO thread lifts take a gentler approach.

PDO thread lifts involve inserting dissolvable sutures (threads) to tighten and lift the skin. PDO stands for polydioxanone, a type of colorless, biodegradable polyester suture that breaks down in the body over time (about 6-8 months).

Once inserted, the threads play two major roles in restoring your skin’s health and youth.

First, they provide supportive scaffolding, delivering a virtually immediate lifting and tightening effect. Second, the threads tap into your body’s healing abilities and trigger the cells in your skin called fibroblasts to make more collagen and elastin to support your facial structure.

This means you get results in the present and the promise of healthier, younger-looking skin in the future.

The ideal candidate

PDO thread lifts are a suitable option for many of our patients, but we always start with an in-depth consultation and evaluation before we make a recommendation. In general, you’re a candidate for PDO threads if you’re in generally good health, looking to avoid surgery, and are frustrated with:

  • Mild-to-moderate skin laxity
  • Jowls
  • Marionette lines
  • Deep nasolabial folds (creases that extend from your nose to your mouth)

We also want to ensure that our PDO thread lift patients have realistic treatment goals and are willing to support their skin with healthy habits and lifestyle choices.

The procedure

PDO thread lifts are minimally invasive, so there’s not much you need to do to prepare. In the days leading up to your procedure, we may ask that you avoid alcohol and tobacco, and any medications that increase your risk of bleeding and bruising.

You can expect your procedure to follow these basic steps:

  • Disinfecting and numbing your skin
  • Inserting a needle and thin tube called a cannula into your skin
  • Placing the threads
  • Removing the needle and cannula
  • Cutting the threads

The best part about PDO thread lifts? The procedure we just outlined usually takes under an hour to complete — and you get to go home shortly after we’re done.

The recovery

The perk of a minimally invasive procedure is not having to deal with long recovery periods. However, there are some rules of thumb to follow to ensure your skin’s health and maximize your results.

You may notice some swelling and bruising during the first day or so following your procedure. Resist the temptation to rub, touch, and massage your face.

We also recommend that you avoid pursing your lips, smoking, drinking through a straw, and sleeping on your side for at least a couple of weeks. Anything that makes you sweat profusely (vigorous exercise and saunas) is also a no-no for a while.

Otherwise, you can get back to your regular routine right away and enjoy your new skin within a matter of days.
